Application

You are interested in the Master's program in Biblical Studies? Find out more about the admission prerequisites and the application process. The program begins each year in October and ends in September of the following year.

Admission Prerequisites

To apply for the Master's Program in Biblical Studies (MBSt), you have to meet certain criteria:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree (4 years, minimum of 240 ECTS-CP) or a Master’s degree from an accredited institution. This degree is in one of the following fields: Protestant Theology, Roman Catholic Theology, Old Catholic Theology, Religious Studies, Orthodox Theology or another related field.

  • You have already worked on Biblical source texts in the original languages (to the extent of one course respectively), and you have sufficient knowledge of Hebrew and Greek (completed language courses in Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek).

  • You have English proficiency at B2 level minimum under the Common European Framework of Reference for language (CEFR). This has to be certified by one of the following language tests: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English. Alternatively, we accept students who have acquired the university entrance qualification in English and/or completed a university degree in a program conducted at least partly in English.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online via the official Portal for Master applications of the University of Bonn: https://application.uni-bonn.de

During the application process, you will be asked to upload the following documents, in PDF format:

  • school leaving certificate
  • Bachelor´s degree(s) and – if any – Master´s degree(s)
  • transcript(s) of records
  • proof of completed language courses in Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek
  • proof of active participation in courses focused on Biblical source texts in both Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek
  • English Language Certificate
  • CV
  • letter of motivation
  • a course paper/essay from your previous studies, which documents your academic skills achieved so far
  • APS certificate (for applications from India, China)

Application Deadlines

Final deadline for applications is 1 July. We recommend that non-EU applicants who also need to apply for a Visa prior to their arrival in Germany send their application before 30 April.

FAQ

Your written sample should consist of a maximum of 10 pages (selected parts of seminar papers, Bachelor´s theses, etc.), and provide adequate material for the evaluation of your qualification.

The following criteria will be considered when assessing the written sample:
  • fundamentals of academic writing;
  • ability to adequately present and reflect academic problems and theories.

You are asked to confirm in writing that the text was written independently, that none other than the specified sources and aids were used, and that any and all citations are marked as such.

No, documentary evidence of proficiency in German is not required. The program is fully taught in English.

If you are interested, you have the option of supplementing your studies by German language courses.

Upon successful completion of the one-year program, you will be awarded the degree of Master of Arts (M.A.).

60 ECTS are registered for the compulsory and elective modules of the Master program "Biblical Studies".

The one-year Master’s program in Biblical Studies is research oriented and opens up the possibility of subsequent doctoral studies – at the University of Bonn or elsewhere.
